Apfelwein - Äppelwoi - Äpfelwein - Äppelwein - Appelwein - Eppelwei

Young Frankfurters tend to even call it "Äppler", which we don´t approve of. Whatever you call the German cider, a good glass of apple wine (known as "Schoppen") is always a pleasure - and has been for hundreds of years.

Fresh apples from regions around Frankfurt (Taunus, Maintal, Wetterau, Odenwald) are pressed in October. Approximately 150 kg are necessary for 100 l of apple wine.

Served out of a "Gerippte"

Of course you can drink apple wine out of any glass. But we are sure you have noticed that apple wine is drank out of a special 0.3 l glass, the so called "Gerippte".
"Gerippte" means ribbed referring of course to the rippled structure of the glass. There are many legends as to where the structure of the glass comes from. But nothing is certain - perhaps it originates from a manufacturer´s mood. Unquestionable is the fact that only apple wine is drank out of these special glasses.

Should you happen to see a 0.25 l or a 0.5 l version of the glass we consider it an atrocity which we silently tolerate.

Served out of a "Bembel"

Who hasn´t seen them? The blue and grey stone jugs called "Bembel". They´re available in several sizes such as 5er, 7er or 10er.
Meaning that 5, 7 or 10 of the 0.3 l glasses fit in the "Bembel". Tradionally "Bembels" were made in Kannebäckerland (Westerwald) and can be used for several years if treated with care.

The advantage for guests and service staff: The apple wine stays cool and the staff do not have to run as much.
